# Bamboo Road Mats

A road mat is a long-format ground protection panel laid end to end to build a temporary haul road across ground that cannot carry repeated vehicle traffic.

**Also known as:** haul road mats, temporary roadway panels, track mats.

Road mats trade the width of an access mat for length, because a haul road is a linear problem: the fewer joints per kilometre, the better the ride and the less the surface migrates under traffic.

Sizes run to 6 m long at 200 mm thick. Weight per mat rises accordingly, so the handling plan (what places them, and how far it has to reach) usually decides the size as much as the load calculation does.

### What is the difference between a road mat and an access mat?

Road mats are longer and narrower, built to be laid end to end into a continuous running surface for repeated vehicle traffic, while access mats are wider platforms used to create work pads and single-crossing access.

### How many road mats do I need per kilometre?

Divide the route length by the mat length and multiply by the number of mats across the running width. A 5 m mat laid two abreast covers a kilometre in roughly 400 mats; the mat calculator works this out from your site dimensions.
