Skids and dunnage are the small structural blocks and bearers that hold pipe, cargo or equipment clear of the ground so it can be supported, drained, slung or inspected.

**Also known as:** pipeline skids, dunnage, bearers, cribbing, railway ties, ship blocks.

These are the small components of a matting programme, and they are usually bought as consumables, which is exactly why service life is the number that matters. A skid that survives more cycles before scrapping changes the cost per use more than the unit price does.

### What is a pipeline skid used for?

A pipeline skid holds welded pipe clear of the trench bottom and the surrounding ground during stringing, welding and coating, keeping the coating undamaged and the pipe accessible from underneath.

### Why use bamboo composite instead of timber for dunnage?

Laminated bamboo is dimensionally stable and resists the rot and splitting that shortens the life of sawn timber dunnage, so units survive more cycles before they are scrapped.
