Bamboo Crane Mats

A crane mat is a heavy load-distribution platform placed under a crane, its outriggers or its tracks, to spread a concentrated point load across enough ground area that the machine stays level and stable.

Also called crane work pads, outrigger pads, 12 inch mats, digging mats and heavy duty mats.

Catalog data last updated

Crane work is where load distribution stops being a convenience and becomes a safety calculation. The mat is sized from outrigger load and allowable ground bearing pressure, and the mat has to hold that rating through repeated setups rather than degrading after a season.

The independent testing behind these figures was carried out by IBST in Vietnam, with quality assurance by SGS. Ask us for the test report covering the size you are specifying.

Common questions

What is a crane mat used for?

A crane mat spreads the concentrated load of a crane outrigger or track across a wider ground area, reducing bearing pressure so the machine stays level and within its stability limits on ground that would otherwise fail.

What load can a bamboo crane mat take?

Crocodile Products bamboo composite mats were tested by IBST to over 480 kN, approximately 49 tonnes, with a measured compressive strength of 87.4 MPa. Sizing for a specific lift must come from the outrigger load and the ground bearing pressure for that site, not from the test figure alone.

How do you size a crane mat?

Divide the outrigger load by the allowable ground bearing pressure to get the required contact area, then choose a mat whose footprint meets or exceeds it. Ground bearing pressure comes from the geotechnical report, not the mat.
