Where hardwood genuinely wins
On raw compressive strength, tropical hardwood measures about 96 MPa against 87.4 MPa for our bamboo composite. If a specification names a compressive figure and nothing else, hardwood clears it by a slightly wider margin.
Where the two materials are close
On density the difference is small: about 1,000 kg/m³ against 1,060, under 6%. Dividing strength by density, hardwood also holds a narrow edge in compression (91 against 87 MPa per 1,000 kg/m³). Anyone telling you bamboo is dramatically lighter for the same load has not divided the numbers.
Where bamboo separates
In tension the gap is not marginal: roughly 140 to 280 MPa against 60 to 100 for hardwood, two to four times the figure at comparable density. Tensile capacity is what resists the bending and splitting that ends a mat's life, which is consistent with the longer service life estimated for bamboo composite: 15 to 25 years against 5 to 15 for hardwood matting. Both figures are estimates, not test results.
