Bamboo vs HDPE Mats

HDPE resists weather better and washes clean, but at roughly 20 to 30 MPa compressive strength against 87.4 MPa it is around three to four times weaker at almost identical density, which puts it in a different class of work: light ground protection rather than crane and rig loads.

Analysis

Different classes of work

The compressive gap is not incremental: roughly three to four times, at almost the same density. HDPE mats are typically specified for pedestrian, light vehicle and turf protection; bamboo composite is used under crane outriggers and drilling rigs. Comparing them on price per mat compares two different jobs.

What HDPE is genuinely better at

HDPE is impervious, washes clean, and does not care how long it sits in standing water. On a short-duration job on soft but not heavily loaded ground, that convenience is a real advantage.

The material question

HDPE is petroleum-derived and non-renewable. Bamboo is a rapidly renewable crop harvested on a 4 to 5 year cycle, which is increasingly a procurement criterion rather than a talking point.
