Bamboo vs Steel Mats

Steel is far stronger in absolute terms, but at roughly 7,850 kg/m³ against 1,000 it is nearly eight times denser, so the comparison in practice is between raw capacity and everything transport, handling and corrosion cost you to get it.

Analysis

Steel is stronger. That is not the whole question.

Steel measures roughly 250 to 400 MPa in compression against 87.4 for bamboo composite, and no honest comparison pretends otherwise. But it is close to eight times denser, and every kilogram is paid for again in freight, in crane time, and in the size of machine needed to place the mat.

Corrosion is the service-life problem

Steel matting corrodes, and the environments matting is used in (muskeg, wetland crossings, coastal and marine sites) are the ones that accelerate it. Bamboo composite does not corrode, which is one reason its estimated service life runs longer despite the lower raw strength.

Where steel still belongs

In rig matting, steel does the job it is best at as a perimeter frame with a composite deck: the frame carries the interlock and the structural span, the deck carries the load, and the assembly avoids paying full steel weight across the whole panel.

Why use bamboo instead of steel matting?
